Hope and Innovation During the Pandemic

Today, I will admit, it is a bit harder than normal to start writing. We have all seen the headlines, and have felt the uncertainty of what the next few weeks and months will bring. All that said, here are a few things I have been keeping in mind that have been offering some degree of comfort.

People have the capacity for kindness and resilience- Situations like the one in which we find ourselves currently can bring out the best and worst in people’s behavior. I will not sugarcoat this state of emergency by pretending everyone is helpful and compassionate, but I will certainly be on the lookout for those who are. Focus on these people. Reach out, even as we must stay at a distance.

This is a time for creativity and innovation- Like all other small business owners who work closely with people, this has been a time to reevaluate business practices and quickly develop new strategies for continuing to serve clients. I am still figuring it out, as are many others. However, while I eagerly look forward to reopening Mpath Well-being for in-person reflexology sessions, I also anticipate that some of the lessons learned during this time may translate over and create new opportunities in the post-pandemic future. Beyond business, I hope that we also think creatively in terms of meeting our basic needs and caring for those who are most vulnerable during this challenging time. It is an opportunity to re-localize and restructure our economy and figure out what is working and what is not. It is a time to turn stress into artwork of all forms both to reflect and to lighten the mood.

Quiet and reflection- There are fewer cars on the roads, fewer people out and about, and everything seems to be moving at a slower pace. To me, the last few days have felt surreal: there is a barely discernible undercurrent of gentleness amidst growing tension. Focus on that gentleness whenever you can, so that tension can be eased just like working a knot out of a tired, sore muscle. While commerce is shut down, life continues. It feels like a much needed break for the Earth itself. Walk, watch, garden, share.

Let’s help each other through this. I am hopeful. This is not to minimize the immense suffering taking place, but to keep us moving and adapting. Be well on your path.
